When the men went to war during World War II, what happened to the Great American Pastime? The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, that's what. Director Penny Marshall's endearing, touching and often hilarious comedy-drama looks back at that era, focusing on the experiences of sisters Geena Davis and Lori Petty as they leave behind the farm to tour the country as part of the Rockville Peaches. Their teammates include loud and proud former bouncer Rosie O'Donnell, timid Ann Cusack, beauty queen Freddie Simpson and, memorably, the irrepressible, devil-may-care Madonna. The team's hard-drinking coach (Tom Hanks) snoozes through games and shirks his responsibilities -- until his players coach him on how to do his job.
