Before he opened relations the People's Republic of China (and before, you know, he resigned in disgrace) President Richard Nixon took part in what may have been the most important summit of the 20th century; his meeting with Elvis Presley in the Oval Office of the White House on December 21, 1970. The photo of the two shaking hands is the single most requested photo of all the estimated eight million photos in the National Archives, believe it or not. And of course there's an entire website dedicated to the meeting.

You can read Elvis' handwritten letter of introduction to the President (and the official transcript of same), Nixon's memorandum for the meeting (complete with some pretty surreal talking points), and Nixon's thank you letter to Elvis for the meeting, among with a few other pieces of ephemera. Be sure to check out the outtake photos of the meeting, like this one of Nixon examining Elvis' cufflinks. They are truly surreal. The whole thing is surreal! It'd be like President Obama meeting with Insane Clown Posse! And don't miss the film - it's a real hoot!
